"UC-Edinburgh - A Proposal" has been launched to mark the opening of the Edinburgh International Internet Festival 2008

Prior to the official launch, the proposal document was circulated to a number of governmental and community agencies with a view to obtaining advice, comment and support for further development

UC-Edinburgh Training & Skills Development

Preparation For Training
The first aim of the project would be to acquire and train a network of volunteer IT tutors able to implement the courses, sessions and workshops, which would form the core structure of the project's computer training provision. The volunteer network would also aim to include those with experience in the production of creative digital media who would work with the UC-Edinburgh Creative Manager in enabling clients to participate in the UC-Edinburgh website.

Equipment & Mobile Internet Access
There is a rapidly increasing number of broadband service providers such as '3 ' and 'T-Mobile' who are offering mobile broadband packages which include provision of a laptop under fixed term service contract. In addition, there is also a growing selection of software programmes such as 'GoToMyPC' - which allow you to remotely access and take direct control of a network of computers from a central point through a secure, private connection.

When combined - A laptop equipped with mobile broadband provision and remote access capability would offer exciting new possibilities in providing IT training services for socially excluded groups such as the disabled and those on long term incapacity benefits.

The project's management's committee would seek to work with the relevant service providers to provide an arrangement able to supply clients with the equipment required to participate in the initiative. Such equipment would remain under ownership of UC-Edinburgh throughout the full course of the training period.

Training Provision
Once this structure is in place and the required training materials have been accessed or created - Clients would receive training in the basics of computing and use of the internet based upon successful adult education models provided by a number of Edinburgh based organisations providing computer training for the over 50 age group.

The initial training would then be enhanced and expanded upon by web based training workshops alongside one to one online training sessions with tutors using methods such as video-conferencing, remote desktop access and a series of printed help-sheets/ lesson-guides.

New Skills In Action - Creative Social Development
Once the client has completed the basic level of training – The aim would be to provide a structured method whereby they could put their new skills into regular practice and develop them further by participation in the production of material for the UC-Edinburgh website.

"Gaining confidence in their abilities and developing or reacquiring communication and social skills would also be a prime consideration at this time!"
